“What are you doing around here at this hour, hmm~?”

Sora stared at the raven-haired teen before him, a bit dumbfounded by the sight… If it wasn’t for the fear in his heart, he probably would have laughed, the other being the perfect description of an ‘evil twin’ for him… “W-who are you?” He questioned quickly, biting back the cowardice threatening to slip into his tone. This person…their very presence was making chills run up and down his spine..he didn’t like it one bit.

Vanitas’ golden eyes stared into deep blue with a smirk. He sense the fear from the brunet’s gaze. Actually he could taste it from where he stood. His arms were crossed over his chest. He was adding things up quickly as a small frown was etched onto his features. “Hn…so that’s where this came from..” He touched his face briefly before a smirk overcame his face. “I am Vanitas and you must be..” It almost sounded like a question, but it was as close a question the other would get from him.

‘Where this came from’? He reiterated silently in his mind, confused by that statement. He bit his lip, looking him over once more. It wasn’t just his own face that was stolen from this boy…the clothing that he wore, that bodysuit…it just rang warning bells loudly in his mind. It was designed..just like Riku’s suit when he was consumed by the darkness..only with a few small alterations. “I..I’m Sora..” He said quietly, half hoping that the other didn’t catch his name, “What do you mean by where ‘this’ came from..? We’re not..connected or anything, right? I’ve never seen you before in my life…”

Riku’s oceanic gaze shifted back out towards the horizon, forward while his mind reeled in reverse. Every mistake, every misstep — he didn’t actively think it but the memories haunted him every time he stood beside Sora. It wasn’t on purpose, no, and Sora would certainly be upset by the news, but it hadn’t been long and everything that Riku had done was in spite of his friendship with this loyal, positive heart that hadn’t ever done anything wrong. It was that guilt that continued to tear him apart, even if he rarely made mention of it to anyone.

But why didn’t he say anything? Why didn’t he confide in his friends — in Kairi, who’d never judge him, or in Sora, who’d never leave? Because of Riku’s own pride; he couldn’t come to terms with the fact that it was a weakness. And so, naturally, he’d bottled it up because he felt that hiding his insecurities were easier than projecting them onto anyone else.

Riku wasn’t ever one to admit not living up to his own standards. He’d always put such high expectations on himself no matter what he did, which was why he excelled. Riku would practice one thing until he was sick of it and then he’d do it even more. It had always been an outlet and likewise, a source of frustration. Sora hadn’t ever put the same stress on himself, not once, and yet he’d still managed to remain close behind in everything. Honestly, Riku could remember fearing that Sora would surpass him without even trying despite how hard the silveret had worked tirelessly. Now, however, he knew that Sora had always been better than he was.

And really, that didn’t bother Riku anymore.

He exhaled and pushed off of the tree he’d rested on, turning to face Sora. His eyes, always expressive, always giving him away no matter how hard he tried, were alight with a positivity that his friends brought out. Even if he hadn’t forgiven himself, and even if being beside Sora made him remember, none of that really mattered. Sora was his best friend and in the end, that was all Riku needed to push forward. That would help him get out of the darkness so long as he could remember how important this all was.

I was out here thinking, not considering what you and I could do for fun.” He grinned, amused while his voice lilted on a light tease. “I really don’t have anything in mind. Actually, I wasn’t expecting to see anyone today.” He shrugged a shoulder, although he didn’t seem at all bothered by Sora’s previous intrusion. “So, I guess I’m up for whatever since you’re already here…not that I mind.

Another light laugh escaped the younger’s lungs at the silveret’s words, that small, almost nervous smile turning sincere once again. As much as he worried for the other’s well being sometimes, he knew that dwelling on that worry wouldn’t get them anywhere. It was the positivity Sora was known for, spreading the cheer to every heart he could, especially Riku’s, that would make the difference.

He never once judged Riku for his decisions…for the mistakes he made. They were all only human, right? And all humans will make mistakes, even dire ones, in their lifetime…All you can do when that time comes, is to try and fix the damage you caused…and Sora would be there, all the way, to help his friend through it, whether he wanted help or not.

“Hmm…I’m still not sure..” He shrugged a bit, taking a few steps closer to the other…always having been more comfortable when being close to the one he was talking to… “I would say spar, or have a race or something, like we usually do..but I’m a bit sore today… I want to do something more relaxing, you know..? I honestly don’t care if we just hang out and talk.. I just don’t want to be alone, and I don’t want you to be, either.” He offered another warm smile, eyes closing happily in time with his grin. “I mean, come on. You know me, Riku~ I’m terrible at making decisions!”

Sorry I haven’t been on too much today, we had to bring my sis to the hospital. Her fever shot up to over 103° this afternoon, so mum brought her to the emergency room. She’s got a bad case of the flu, but they admitted her in due to the fever and her blood pressure was sky-high. Hopefully she’ll be home soon, but with our hospital, who knows. I swear, it must be in their policy that, no matter what, once a patient is admitted, the least amount of time they can stay is a week »

Anyway, if you know my big sister Steph (onthewingsofdarkness), don’t get too worried if you don’t hear from her for awhile. She’ll be alright, I’m sure, and I’ll keep you updated as much as I can.

I’ll be on as much as possible, but I’ll also be visiting and taking care of her a lot, as well. So for everyone, please be patient if you’re waiting on a reply for me—it might take longer than usual. But hopefully everything will be back to normal within the next week ^_^

Sora stared at the tall man, a sense of familiarity aching in his chest, but he pushed it aside, “Hey, there. I’m Sora, and you..?”

“Oh, hey there, Tifa! What brings you here?” Sora smiled brightly at the dark-haired women, happy to see a familiar face. Even though she wasn’t exactly as close to the brunet as Leon and the others were, he of course considered the two friends, nonetheless.

Sora’s frown stayed strong— he knew exactly how stubborn Riku could be, probably more stubborn than himself, but he knew how the other felt…it’s not like his own life was just sunshine and rainbows. He had as rough of a time as Riku did, sometimes, but he hid from it. He hid behind his smiles, his never-ending waves of happiness..even if, on the inside, he wasn’t even that happy..

The brunet certainly had gone through a lot, too, all the times he had to put himself so close to the darkness in order to fight it..coming close to losing his life many times. Even a heart as bright as his own wasn’t immune to the darkness, and his Anti From proved that.

..But it’s not like he would show it. He just put on another smile. It didn’t matter if Riku didn’t want his help or not, he’d give it, anyway. He wasn’t going to lose his best friend, no, not again. He would help him get through this, may his help be welcome or not.

“Eh, you know, just hanging out~” He said, his voice perked up with a soft hum, “Why I’m alone? Well, honestly, I was looking for you. Kairi’s not around, so..I thought it’d be nice to spend some time with you.”

One thing was certain as he watched the way that Sora shifted back into a positive atmosphere — Riku’s best friend was more buoyant. No matter what befell him, he could handle it with the grace of a smile and while Riku knew him better than anyone, knew that Sora had suffered in his own way, the silveret fully believed in the boy’s strength of heart. In the end, even when his world came crashing down, he’d been able to emotionally withstand and come out stronger in the end.

Riku envied that ability. His weak-minded decisions and emotional reactions to a fabricated situation had cost him dearly. Living in the darkness, while he would never make an issue of it, had taken its toll. He was mentally worn and perhaps while he struggled to build himself back into a spirit worthy of the light, he’d come to fight his own finale; hadn’t he been meant to be consumed? But he thought that truly, the end result was prolonging the inevitable — his time would come, ticking away even as they stood on their island with the tropical breeze ruffling their hair.

His eyes shifted back onto the horizon. Every inch of the churning sea glistened beneath the sunlight and all that occurred to Riku then was how badly he’d wanted to escape this prison. He smiled wryly and lifted a hand to tussle his ardent hair. Stop over thinking, he chastised. “Really?” was the idle question as he shook his head. “I’m not really doing anything interesting.” That smile reflected a fleeting amusement as he turned his attention back to Sora. “But thanks, I could probably use the company.” It would keep him from burrowing too far into the crashing depths of his own mind.

So, you found me — did you have something in mind?To do or to talk about, Riku silently implied.

And as much as Riku envied Sora, he never thought that he would be able to overcome the envy he had for the older male. As much as he dearly loved his best friend, he could never get over that dark little spot in his heart..the spot that ached to be like the other. Riku always seemed to be better than him at everything.. races, sparring matches, intelligence, emotional control..everything. The only reason he believed he was able to beat Riku those few times were because those were the times it truly mattered.. if he had lost, who knows what could have happened? He could have lost his best friend, for good…it was his heart that made him stronger in those times..but all other times, he still felt so..amateur in comparison to the silveret.

When Sora’s emotions just got too out of hand, when he just broke down because of them, Riku always stayed strong, calm and collected..there to take control of the situation, ready to calm down Sora when he needed it most… As much as Riku may have believed he belonged to the darkness, he knew otherwise… He wasn’t like the others of the dark…he was his own person, his heart truly full of good intentions…and he envied that, too. Maybe that envy, that respect for the other was what made the feelings the brunet had for Kairi and the feelings he had for Riku so different… That wanting to be like him… Yes, that was the most logical explanation..right?

The younger was ripped away from his thoughts when he heard Riku speak again, brown spikes tossing gently as he shook his head back into focus, “Aha..well, I didn’t really think about that yet,” He admitted with a light-hearted laugh, “I just knew I wanted to spend some time with you…figured the rest would go from there, you know? Why, do you have anything in mind?”

Sora smiled brightly at the red-head, waving happily to his friend, “Hey, there, Kairi!”

“Sora~!” The girl offers him a wide grin, waggling fingers in greeting as she turns around to meet sky-blue eyes with her own. “Now just where have you been off to lately and without me no less, hmmm?

He chuckled softly, rubbing the back of his neck, “Oh, no where much,” He said, offering up another sincere smile, “Just hanging around, sparring with Riku, you know, the usual. What about you?”
